What Is an Italian Affogato?
Affogato (ah-foh-GAH-toh) means "drowned" in Italian. It's vanilla gelato or ice cream drowned in a shot of hot espresso. That's the whole thing - two ingredients that create something greater than the sum of their parts.
The hot espresso melts the cold ice cream, creating a creamy, coffee-swirled situation that's part dessert, part drink, all delicious. It's the kind of thing Italian cafรฉs have been serving forever, and the kind of thing they often overcharge for.
Traditional affogato uses vanilla gelato, but high-quality vanilla ice cream works just as well. This Ninja Creami version gives you homemade ice cream that's smooth, creamy, and perfect for drowning in espresso.
Want it non-dairy? Use my Vanilla Coconut Ice Cream as the base instead.
Why You'll Love This
- Cafรฉ-quality at home - Same dessert, fraction of the price
- Quick assembly - Once the ice cream is ready, it takes 30 seconds
- Only two main components - Ice cream + espresso = magic
- Totally customizable - Add liqueur, change the ice cream flavor, adjust the ratio
- Impressive but easy - Looks fancy, requires minimal effort
- Perfect for entertaining - Scoop ice cream ahead, pour espresso at serving
- Works without an espresso machine - Strong coffee or instant espresso works too
Ingredients You'll Need
For the Vanilla Ice Cream Base
- Heavy Cream - Creates richness and that classic scoopable texture
- Half-and-Half - Lightens the base without making it icy
- Cottage Cheese - Adds protein and creaminess without any cheesy taste (it blends in completely)
- Sweetened Condensed Milk - Provides sweetness and helps keep the ice cream soft
- Vanilla Extract - Classic flavor base. Use vanilla bean paste for those pretty specks.
For Serving
- Espresso or Strong Coffee - Hot, freshly brewed, poured over right before eating
See recipe card for exact quantities.
No Espresso Machine? No Problem.
You don't need fancy equipment to make great affogato. Here are your options:
- Moka Pot (Stovetop Espresso) Makes concentrated, espresso-style coffee. Use about 1-2 oz per serving.
- Aeropress Brew a concentrated shot using the espresso method. Strong and smooth.
- French Press Use a higher coffee-to-water ratio (2:1) and steep for 4 minutes. Use 2-3 oz per serving.
- Strong Brewed Coffee Make your regular coffee but use double the grounds. It won't be as concentrated as espresso, but it works. Use about ยผ cup per serving.
- Instant Espresso Powder Dissolve 1-2 teaspoons instant espresso in 2 oz hot water. Quick and easy.
The key is using HOT coffee or espresso. The temperature contrast is what creates that beautiful melting effect and the foam on top.
Add a Splash of Liqueur
Traditional affogato often includes a shot of Italian liqueur. It's completely optional, but it takes things up a notch for an after-dinner treat.
Best liqueurs for affogato:
- Amaretto - Almond-flavored, sweet, classic Italian choice
- Frangelico - Hazelnut-flavored, nutty and smooth
- Kahlรบa - Coffee-flavored, doubles down on the coffee
- Bailey's Irish Cream - Creamy, chocolatey, indulgent
- Sambuca - Anise-flavored, traditional Italian
- Grand Marnier - Orange-flavored, great with chocolate variations
How much: Add ยฝ to 1 oz of liqueur. You can pour it over with the espresso or drizzle it on top.
Keeping it alcohol-free? Add a few drops of almond extract for that amaretto vibe without the booze.
How to Make Affogato Ice Cream

- In a Vitamix blender, combine heavy cream, half and half, cottage cheese, condensed milk, and vanilla extract. Blend until smooth.

- Pour the ice cream base into the Ninja Creami pint container and freeze for at least 24 hours.

- Once frozen, insert the pint into the Ninja Creami and select the "Ice Cream" function. Allow it to churn until smooth.

- Assemble the Affogato: Scoop 2 balls of ice cream into a small bowl, glass, or cup. Brew your espresso fresh and hot. Pour the espresso directly over the ice cream.
- Serve Immediately: An affogato waits for no one. The espresso is melting the ice cream as you watch. Serve right away and enjoy the show.

How to Eat an Affogato
This is part dessert, part drink, so there's a technique:
- Start with a spoon - Scoop up the ice cream while it's still cold, letting the espresso mix in
- Enjoy the contrast - Get some cold ice cream and warm espresso in each bite
- Finish with a sip - Once the ice cream melts, pick up the glass and drink the remaining coffee-cream mixture
Some people prefer to let it melt completely and drink it like a fancy iced coffee. Others attack it immediately while everything is still distinct. There's no wrong way.
Affogato Variations
Once you've mastered the classic, try these twists:
Mint Chocolate Chip Affogato Use mint chocolate chip ice cream instead of vanilla. The mint and coffee together is surprisingly good.
Double Chocolate Affogato Use chocolate ice cream and add chocolate shavings on top. For serious chocolate lovers.
Mocha Affogato Use coffee ice cream for double the coffee hit. Add a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
Coconut Affogato Use vanilla coconut ice cream and top with toasted coconut flakes. Dairy-free and tropical.
Salted Caramel Affogato Drizzle salted caramel sauce over vanilla ice cream before adding the espresso. Sprinkle flaky sea salt on top.
Pumpkin Spice Affogato (Fall) Use pumpkin spice ice cream and add a pinch of cinnamon on top.
Equipment
- Ninja Deluxe 11-in-1 Frozen Treat Maker: The star of the show, perfect for creating smooth treat!

Topping Ideas
Keep it simple or go all out:

- Cocoa nibs - Crunchy and slightly bitter
- Crushed amaretti cookies - Traditional Italian pairing
- Chopped hazelnuts or almonds - Nutty crunch
- Biscotti on the side - For dipping
- Caramel drizzle - Sweet and indulgent
- Flaky sea salt - A tiny pinch enhances everything

- Chill your glasses - Slows melting, extends enjoyment
- Don't over-pour - One shot of espresso is plenty for 2 scoops
- Use quality espresso - Medium to dark roast works best
- Try decaf for evening - All the flavor, none of the sleeplessness
- Let guests pour their own - Makes it interactive and fun
