Dubai chocolate has been everywhere lately: the pistachio-kataifi bars, the ice cream, the strawberry cups. This hot chocolate pulls the same flavors into a warm drink. It's rich, floral, and a little indulgent, the kind of thing you make when a regular mug of cocoa isn't going to cut it.
After making a Dubai-inspired chocolate and pistachio ice cream, I couldn't stop thinking about a warm version. Then came my Dubai Strawberry Cups, cool, creamy, and loaded with cardamom-rose flavor.
This hot chocolate pulls from both: warm milk, floral notes, and that nutty crunch on the rim. If you're into bold, cozy drinks with Middle Eastern flair, I've rounded up more Dubai-style chocolate desserts here.

Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Quick to Make: Ready in about 10 minutes, once you have the ingredients on hand.
- Bold Flavor: Cocoa, cardamom, and rose come together for something warmer and more floral than regular hot chocolate.
- Adjustable: Easy to dial the sweetness and spice up or down to your taste.
- Worth the Presentation: The pistachio and kataifi rim makes it look like more effort than it actually is.
Ingredients
This is just an overview. Jump down to the full recipe card for exact amounts and detailed instructions!
- Milk: Whole milk gives the creamiest base.
- Cocoa Powder: The chocolate flavor the whole drink is built on.
- Sugar: Adjust to taste.
- Cardamom Pod, lightly crushed: Infuses a warm, spiced note into the milk.
- Edible Rose Petals: A subtle floral note, not overpowering.
- Pistachio Cream: Used to rim the cup. Store-bought works, or make your own.
- Kataifi Pastry: Toasted, for a crunchy cup rim.
- Salt, a pinch, optional: Rounds out the sweetness.
Substitution and Additions
- Milk Alternatives: Almond or oat milk work for a dairy-free version.
- Sweeteners: Honey or maple syrup can replace sugar.
- Spices: Try cinnamon or nutmeg for a different flavor profile.
- No Pistachio Cream? Pistachio butter works as a substitute, though it's slightly less sweet, so you may want a touch more honey or sugar in the rim mixture.
- No Kataifi? Crushed phyllo dough or even crushed graham crackers, toasted the same way, give a similar crunch if kataifi isn't available near you.
- No Rose Petals? A small drop of rose water added with the cardamom gets you the same floral note without needing the dried petals.
- Toppings: Whipped cream or a sprinkle of chopped pistachios on top.
How to Make Dubai Hot Chocolate
- Toast the Kataifi Pastry: In a dry pan over medium heat, toast until golden brown. Let it cool.
- Prepare the Cup Rim: Spread pistachio cream around the rim of your mug. Dip the rim into the cooled, toasted kataifi to coat.
- Infuse the Milk: In a saucepan, warm the milk with rose petals and crushed cardamom pod. Heat gently without boiling. Remove the rose petals and cardamom pod from the milk.
- Add Cocoa and Sugar: Stir in cocoa powder and sugar until fully dissolved.
- Serve: Pour the hot chocolate into your prepared mug and enjoy.
What to Serve With This
- Dubai Chocolate Strawberry Cups: Same cardamom-rose flavor profile, cold instead of warm. A good pairing if you want both temperatures on the table.
- Buttered croissant or pastry: Something flaky and plain works well alongside the drink, it doesn't compete with the pistachio and kataifi already on the rim.
- Fresh dates: A small plate on the side leans into the same Middle Eastern flavor world without adding more sugar to the cup itself.
- A simple shortbread cookie: Plain enough to dip, sturdy enough to hold up in a warm drink.
Variations
- Pistachio Hot Chocolate: Stir a spoonful of pistachio cream directly into the warm milk instead of only using it on the rim, for pistachio flavor in every sip, not just the first one.
- White Chocolate Version: Swap the cocoa powder for melted white chocolate for a sweeter, milder cup that leans more into the rose than the cocoa.
- Extra Floral: Add a drop of rose water along with the cardamom for a stronger floral note, useful if your rose petals are on the milder side.
- Iced Version: Let the infused milk cool completely, then serve over ice with the cocoa and sugar stirred in cold. Rim the glass with pistachio cream and kataifi the same way.
- Spiced Up: Add a small piece of cinnamon stick or a pinch of ground cinnamon along with the cardamom for a warmer, more layered spice profile.
Rose's Tips
- Gentle Heating: Avoid boiling the milk. Too much heat can flatten the cardamom and rose notes.
- Strain Well: Remove all the solids before serving for a smooth drink, no bits of cardamom pod or rose petal in your cup.
- Toast Kataifi Fresh: Do this right before serving so the rim stays crunchy instead of going soft.
- Make the Infused Milk Ahead: Prepare a larger batch of milk infused with cardamom and rose petals, then store it in the fridge. Heat portions as needed, stirring in cocoa and sugar right before serving.
